Version: V 2025.2a Article 4
This is the story about Joey Gnomey. In the last article, Joey deploys his networking and negotiating skills to lock in a better than average pay rate for his cane cutting gang members. After a few cane cutting seasons, Joey and his gang became highly sort after due to their work ethic. They were paid well, but they worked hard to make sure the farmer got his quota of cane cut and to the sugar mill in record time. This approach benefited the cane farmer greatly as the prompt turnaround by the cane cutting gang meant the cane sugar content remained high and the Mill who paid on how much sugar content was in the cane, in turn paid the farmer well. After several years of hard work, Joey had saved enough money to pay a deposit on a small sugar cane farm he had been keen to buy for some time. He had diligently researched what other farms were selling for in the area and he also checked the local Council records for any thing that may adversely effect the price of the farm such as flooding, council easements and any gazetted roads. Once Joey felt he had exhausted all the knowledge he could gleam from his research, it was time to approach the owner and make a reasonable offer that would not be refused. The owner of the farm, Mack A Gnomia, was nick named by the locals as Macadamia because he was “ a hard nut to crack”. His farm had been for sale for some time. Most buyers would say his asking price was too high but Macadamia refused to believe that, sticking to his guns on the price. Not one to be dissuaded by Macadamia’s gruff nature, and armed with specific knowledge of the property coupled with the benefit of basic negotiation skills he had learnt as the manager of the cane cutting gang, Joey was able to point out to Macadamia that his offer was fair .After a long negotiation, they struck a deal.
