This is the story about Joey Gnomey. In the last article, Giuseppe Gnomia has left the little known country of Gnomia, a small island nation in the Mediterranean to immigrate to the “ Lucky Country” - Gnomozzia, in the belief that he would become a millionaire in just 6 months! On arrival, the customs officers had trouble pronouncing his name so they called him Joey Gnomey instead and stamped his immigration papers with those words. At first he was annoyed with the name change, but then became quite happy with it, especially when he was greeted with a friendly “ Hey Joey, Howzitgoin” by the locals. And so, the name stuck. On his arrival to the cane cutting farms of the far north, Joey learns devasting news .The cane cutting season would not commence for another 6 months, hence there was no prospect of becoming a millionaire for another 6 months……bugga!. So what to do? In the meantime, Joey, found whatever work he could do for whom ever needed a hand. Painting houses and sheds, ploughing the paddock ( horse and plough in those days ! ), fixing fences, feeding the cattle, cleaning the mess at the local Pub – it was not the highly paid sugar cane cutting work he envisaged , but that did not matter – work was work. And in the process, Joey leant some essential life skills such as how to find work, living within your means and negotiating pay rates ( no Unions for in those days! ). Eventually the cane cutting season kicked in. With his networking and negotiating skills, Joey formed a cane cutting gang and was able to lock in a better than average pay rate for the gang members – but on the proviso they got paid for how much cane they cut, not by the hour. With some strategic thinking, this approach benefited both the gang members and farm owner. In upcoming articles you will see how Joey will benefit from these essential business skills learnt as a young man.
